Running is a major part of my life. I love the feeling of being outdoors running along a track for seven plus miles, and I also get a rush of adrenaline taking to the treadmill too.

No matter how or where you choose to run, it is always good to know the pros and cons of every method and then see what fits best.

Outdoors

Pros:
• You’re on your own since a treadmill isn’t helping you.
• Just being outdoors in fresh air, among the people is a great motivation.
• You can run with your dog.
• Running track is another way to go green.
• Best method for marathon or long distance running training. Practice in the elements.
• The option to see and run new routes.
• You can learn to pace yourself more naturally.

Cons:
• Elements of nature can throw off your routine (i.e. rain, snow, seasons, etc.)
• Potential for getting lost or seriously injured.

Treadmill

Pros:
• The treadmill is great for running longer distances.
• It’s great for people suffering from injuries since it’s not as strenuous as running track.
• Treadmills can offer various workout modes in a single location.  My FreeMotion® Fitness SmartRun 2.0 Treadmill is a perfect example because it offers 30 different workouts in one machine!
• You are at easy access to a bathroom.
• It limits the range of body movement.
• There is not danger of outside elements: raining, cars, debris, etc.
• It’s consistent. The treadmill will always be there.

Cons:
• It gets tedious. And we all know a boring routine can easily stop you from exercising.
• You may not have easy access to one.

My conclusion… do both! It's always better to mix up your fitness routine.
