Women may still out number men by the droves at salons and spas, but guys are taking their grooming and personal upkeep into consideration more and more these days. Even though men visit salons at a fraction of the rate that women do, the number of guys seated in the plushy salon chairs could soon spike, as several high profile athletes have recently publicly embraced the idea of getting the routine sports pedicure.
Part massage, part standard pedicure, the sports pedicure begins by soaking the feet in warm water and Epsom-salt, followed by the application of foot cream, a thorough massage of the feet and legs, toenail trimming, and is finished with an exfoliating scrub that removes dry, dead skin from the feet. Since athletes make their living by being quick on their feet, it’s no surprise that some of the most recognizable sports stars have decided to give their soles some TLC.
Dr. Howard Osterman, the podiatrist for the Washington Wizard basketball team, noted the importance of such treatments for athletes who put their feet through severe stress for a living. Massages help to circulate blood flow and reduces swelling and pain, while eliminating areas of hardened skin cells and reducing pressure points. Frequently cutting nails is also vital to prevent ingrown toenails. The sports pedicure, overall, helps the athlete stay light on his overworked feet.
