Each year, the brave men and women who protect our country are honored during Armed Forces Week, concluding with tomorrow’s Armed Forces Day. Since 1950, Armed Forces Day has been observed to salute those who serve in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. Often confused with Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day is when civilians get the chance to celebrate the military and learn about what our soldiers are currently doing to protect Americans, all while taking part in festivals, air shows and visiting nearby military bases. Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May, is the day we remember those service men and women who are no longer with us.
Cities throughout the nation will be holding parades, festivals and activities to honor the troops, so here are a few great ways that you can make the most out of Armed Forces Day.
Attend an air show or parade. Check your local newspaper to find out about military air shows or parades in your area. Lawton Fort Still in Oklahoma hosts one of the largest Armed Forces Day celebrations in the U.S., with more than 1,000 service men and women marching alongside patriotic floats and bands.
Send a care package overseas. Organizations like Operation Gratitude, Books for Soldiers and Operation Troop Aid hold events across the country to assemble care packages for deployed troops. Pitch in and help make a soldier’s day! You can also help our veterans by supporting Team Red, White and Blue.
Be patriotic at home. Armed Forces Day is a great day to talk with your family about the importance of the American military. Turn the day into a fun, hands-on lesson by flying a flag in the front yard and making patriotic crafts together.
It’s important for each of us to show our support for these heroes, and tomorrow is a great day to get involved and support the men and women who work so hard to protect our freedom.
Do you know of any great organizations that support our military? Tell me about them in the comments section!
